Mr. Fix It Comes to Town

There are just some things around the house out here in Arizona that I can't fix.  Or that I just don't get to.

It's always nice when someone from back home comes out to visit and I get some help.  Don't get me wrong, I try not to take advantage of their visit because I know they are on vacation, but still, I have been known to make a small 'to do' list!

In this case, Mr. Fix It is my SO, or partner, or whatever the heck you call someone that you are not married to but live with.  And.....I made a 'to do' list.

Oh....and I use the term 'live with' loosely as for about 8 months of the year we live apart as I take dad to Phoenix to escape the Indiana winters.  Mr. Fix It is not retired yet.  It's not easy sustaining a relationship like this let me tell you!

The first thing on that list was to replace the garbage disposal.  A few months back I thought I would attempt to put the new one in but quickly decided that it might not be a good idea.  Although dad might have been able to talk me through it, something about doing the electric hook-up was a bit scary.

Then there was an issue with the screen in my bedroom window not fitting properly.  Many screens out here fit on the outside, directly over the window rather than being part of the actual window unit.  There was a gap at the bottom of my screen that was actually big enough for a small rattle snake and scorpions to get through.  Consequently, I have never been able to have my window open to get fresh air.  He fixed it!

Since Mr. Fix It is a firefighter, I also sent him up to the peak of the roof to fix a loose tile.  He's used to climbing ladders!

I gave him a break after all those chores and let him ride my bike.  He even adjusted the seat for me and now it's much more comfortable.

Though it's not on the actual 'to do' list, I'm wondering if Mr. Fix It can fix our relationship too.  We've been riding a roller coaster that is about to come off it's tracks since last summer.  As if it's not hard enough to sustain a long distance relationship, we now have issues with family.  Dad came to live with me full time last summer.   Mr. Fix It's daughter, her fiance, their year and half old daughter, as well as Mr. Fix It's son, all managed to move back home.
I won't share all the gory details but am sure you can imagine how difficult last summer was.

At least for now, the 'to do' list for the house has been 'fixed'!

  1. I had this wonderful comment, full and ready to go when I spied the scorion above...yikes, I am terrified of those things.

So I left the page and lost the comment.

It is wonderful to have someone help with chores like that. There is much I can not manage and ultimately, it doesn't get done. I did not marry Mr Fix It.

Multiple families under one roof is becoming a norm. Many people can no longer afford to live unless they share, expenses and dwellings.

It will work out if it's meant to be. Look on the bright side, and this is very important from my view, no scorpians can come through that screen!

  2. I'm glad you have a Mr. Fix It. No relationship is perfect, especially when you throw in caregiving and taking in other family members. I hope things work out - try to remember all those issues you mentioned are temporary. Hang in there

  3. Karen,
A SO that can fix things!! OMG Keep that man around! It's certainly not easy these days as more families find themselves in situations like yours. It can test the strongest of relationships. I hope things work out as he looks like a great guy! Who couldn't love a firefighter!

  4. Karen,
You have an SO worth his weight in gold if he is a Mr. Fix It! Don't get me wrong, I love my guy, but fixing is not in the picture! In terms of relationships, it's always hard when so many folks need our time and attention. Be sure to protect the time you two do have together. No one else will! Our family members sometimes need to be reminded that, though we want to help them out, they can fend for themselves on some levels, and we deserve fun, joy, and love too. Hang in there!
    Cheers!

  5. Karen, family. You can't live with them and you can't live without them. Seriously, we love them, we want to strangle them. We want them to visit, sometimes we are glad when they leave. Family. A conundrum. I think your Mr. Fix It is sweet and considerate to do some fixing up around the house. And I know you appreciate it. I hope that if you both want to stay partners through this roller coaster we all call life that you make it and are happy!

    What scorpion?

  6. Karen ~
So glad Mr. Fix-It came for a visit and was able to help you.
You have a rocky road ahead with all the potholes (family), but hopefully things will work out. Maintaining a relationship can be work but so worth it.
    Hugs :)

  7. Hi, Karen. I found your blog on Acorn Hollow and am enjoying catching up. Glad Mr. Fixit fixed the screen for sure. Don't like scorpions or rattlesnakes!!! We're headed to Tucson for a visit with my husband's mom in about 3 weeks. Looking forward to it.

  8. Hi Dianne....glad you found me!! I am only about an hour and a half from Tuscon. It is so nice here right now, 81 today and not a cloud in the sky. I am far from fond of scorpions or snakes too!!!
